David Wright MP has launched a campaign to get new and improved facilities for young people in Telford and to consult young people across his constituency on lowering the voting age to 16. The Labour MP for Telford is planning to consult with young people in Telford so that they could help to decide what services should be provided. He is also planning a series of visits to schools in the autumn to promote his ‘Youth Voice’ referendum campaign on lowering the voting age. The campaign was launched as the Labour Government unveiled its strategy for new and improved youth facilities in every community in England. David Wright MP said: “Young people in Telford need more things to do and places to go, and they also deserve to have a say in how our council and our country is run. That’s why I am delighted that the Labour Government will be investing in new and improved youth facilities in every community and it’s also why I think every young person in Telford should make their views known on lowering the age of voting to 16. “I want our area to benefit and over the coming months I will be talking to young people and local community organisations about what facilities they would like to see available in the future. “It will be up to them to decide what our area needs, whether that’s sports facilities, places to go to participate in activities like dance and drama, mobile youth centres or skate parks and I am hopeful that Telford & Wrekin Council will listen to the voice of young people. “The idea is to create a lasting legacy for the community and bring about better political engagement as well as creating assets to benefit current and future generations and I’m excited at the chance to help improve what’s on offer to young people in Telford and across the country.” The ‘Youth Voice’ campaign will officially be launched at the start of the new school term and Mr Wright will be helping schools across his constituency to hold referendums on lowering the voting age to 16 as part of their citizenship classes. Mr Wright will be visiting schools to answer questions from young people about youth facilities investment and to campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote in the referendum. Mr Wright added: “I think the arguments in favour of lowering the voting age to 16 are immensely powerful and I will be campaigning for a strong ‘Yes’ vote which I can take back to Westminster to pass on to Government Ministers.” |
